CLINICAL MODELS

Victories of the Heart was founded by two clinicians, one a psychologist and the other a social worker. Our programs are developed and reviewed by a committee comprised largely of mental health professionals. The senior leadership for each of our weekends includes at least one licensed therapist, while the volunteers who help facilitate our weekends and personal growth groups are trained and supervised by working practitioners. Our code of ethics, screening practices, and informed consent are all consistent with guidelines followed by clinical professionals. We also consult with outside clinicians and academicians. Given this background, it is no surprise that our programs are built on solid foundations of theory and practice.

The BreakThrough Weekend is strongly influenced by psychodynamic thinking, the client-centered approach, and family systems theory. Its activities include psychodrama, Gestalt techniques, and communications exercises. The Wisdom Years Weekend reflects a psychodynamic perspective on family of origin, a cognitive behavioral focus on reframing self-defeating beliefs, and an existential emphasis on meaning and mortality.  Its processes, consisting primarily of large and small group work, follow widely accepted principles of group dynamics - principles that also drive our personal growth groups. The Shadow Weekend, also shaped by psychodynamic thinking, utilizes Jungian motifs to stimulate self-exploration.
