Why do men have difficulties in relationships? Why do men struggle to be fully open and known to their partners? How can men learn to be in a relationship that thrives?

Some men have an unfortunate tendency to close down emotionally, stonewall out of anger or fear or both, clamor to "fix it" rather than "hear it." Often men see conflict as an indictment of their manhood and their inadequacies, and they get flooded with shame for their “weakness.” Whether it is fear or ignorance or both, many men often have a tendency to avoid being vulnerable and loving, resistant to listening and being truly intimate. Those things that keep men from authenticity in their relationships are often peeled away by awakening them to what lies underneath.

Victories has invited three local experts to talk with us about the obstacles men face in nurturing successful relationships: Dr. Arthur Nielsen, Sara Schwarzbaum, and Leo Dhont. We will hear their perspectives and best practices, provide you an opportunity to share your own challenges and successes, and come together in a better understanding of this complex topic.

Victories has worked in the field of men’s personal growth work for over 30 years. Our weekends and groups provide a safe, confidential space for men to entertain these new ways of being. They gain the perspective that one can rely on other men, and that most men share the same doubts and confusion about how to be in relationships.

Leo Dhont, LCSW: Leo has been doing couples therapy for some 50 years and has a practice which is modelled after the theories of Harville Hendrix and John Gottman. Leo developed the Couples Weekend for Victories along with his wife Peggy Dhont. More info at

Dr. Art Nielsen: Art has worked with couples for years and has recently written and published a book on couples counseling titled, A Roadmap for Couple Therapy: Integrating Systemic, Psychodynamic and Behavioral Approaches. Art is a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst and has a private practice. He is on the faculty at Northwestern’s Feinberg School of Medicine, the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis, and The Family Institute at Northwestern. More info at

Dr. Sara Schwarzbaum, LMFT & LCPC: Sara has practiced marriage and family therapy for over 25 years. She founded Couples Counseling Associates in 2008 in response to the growing need for relationship counseling services in the Chicago area. She has also served as the Coordinator of the Master's program in Couple & Family Counseling at Northeastern Illinois University. More info at
