Most people believe that their romantic partner should make them feel happy and alive and end their misery as a single person. When their partner doesn't, they try to change him or her or look for another partner. Yet, for many, no partner can keep them away from the pain and shame they carry. The Internal Family Systems (IFS) model helps clients become their own primary caretakers for the young, needy parts of themselves that carry the pain and shame. Once this inner trust is achieved, clients can love their partners courageously and unconditionally because they don't need their partners to always lift their spirits.

This workshop will introduce the Internal Family Systems model of psychotherapy and how it can be used to help couples achieve courageous love by healing the parts that interfere with intimacy. Therapists will also learn how to help couples communicate from a place of compassion, calm, clarity and confidence—from the Self. When couples have Self-led conversations, their relationships harmonize naturally. They can discuss highly charged issues productively and feel safe to reveal their most vulnerable parts to each other.

Richard Schwartz, Ph.D.
Richard Schwartz earned his Ph.D. in Marriage and Family Therapy from Purdue University, after which he began a long association with the Institute for Juvenile Research at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and more recently at The Family Institute at Northwestern University, attaining the status of Associate Professor at both institutions. Dr. Schwartz developed Internal Family Systems (IFS) in response to clients' descriptions of experiencing various parts–many extreme–within themselves. IFS provides an alternative understanding of psychic functioning and healing that allows for innovative techniques in relieving clients' symptoms and suffering. In 2000, Dr. Schwartz founded The Center for Self Leadership (CSL) in Oak Park, Illinois, which offers trainings, workshops, an annual conference, publications, and video resources of Dr. Schwartz's work through its website at His books include Family Therapy: Concepts and Methods (with Michael Nichols), Internal Family Systems Therapy, Introduction to the Internal Family Systems Model, The Mosaic Mind (with Regina Goulding), and Metaframeworks (with Doug Breunlin and Betty Karrer). A new book about using IFS with couples, You Are The One You've Been Waiting For, was published in September 2008. Dr. Schwartz maintains a private practice in Oak Park, Illinois.

Our weekends are the only such men's programs in the Chicago area that are designed by professionals, supervised by licensed practitioners, and based on widely accepted clinical principles.

BreakThrough Weekend - The BreakThrough Weekend is a decisive and vital step towards removing the barriers that stand between the lives we lead and the lives we seek.

Wisdom Years Weekend - The Wisdom Years Weekend helps men over the age of 50 begin to answer a challenging and profound question: How do I want to live the rest of my life?

Shadow Weekend - The Shadow Weekend helps men achieve greater wholeness, increased power, and improved relationships by guiding them to discover and own unacknowledged parts of themselves.

Personal Growth Groups
- Victories Personal Growth Groups offer weekend participants a place to continue their growth with the support of their peers and the larger Victories community.

For Mental Health Professionals
- Victories programs accelerate men's progress in therapy by helping them build an increased capacity to engage openly and effectively in the therapeutic process.
